A swimming polar bear is a powerful image. To understand the habitat question behind it, though, we need to look beyond whether the animal can cross the water.

Sea ice is a feeding platform

Polar bears use sea ice to gain access to seals. Changes in the availability and timing of that habitat can affect where bears travel and how they obtain food. USGS research examines movement, health, energy use and population dynamics rather than relying on a single type of observation.

The GoPro film linked in the archive shows selected swimming scenes. It cannot, on its own, establish that every bear shown is starving, how far each has travelled or what happened after filming.

Sea ice, ice sheets and icebergs

Sea ice forms from seawater; it is not the same thing as a land-based ice sheet. Its role also varies across Arctic settings, so a universal countdown for every population oversimplifies the issue. Movement, feeding and the research record

The important habitat question is not simply whether a polar bear can swim. It is how the animal gains access to food across a changing environment, and what travelling between useful areas requires. A swimming scene makes the movement visible while leaving much of that history outside the frame. Measurements of movement, condition and population change help researchers connect those pieces. This is why the USGS work linked above offers a more useful basis for understanding the issue than assigning a cause or outcome to every bear in a short film.

Keep the film separate from the larger research record. Comparing observations over time, with locations and methods attached, is how scientists investigate changing habitat use. The United States listing referenced in the older text dates to 2008; it is historical context, not a substitute for a current population assessment.
