Information involved when you use this website

Browsing and technical information: Google’s Blogger platform hosts this website. Delivering pages and protecting the service can involve your IP address, browser and device information, requested URLs, referral information and request timestamps. Images, fonts and other resources supplied by external hosts also involve requests to those providers.
Messages you send: your email address, name if supplied, message and any attachments. Please avoid including sensitive information or information about other people unless it is necessary for your enquiry.
Comments: where comments are available, your comment and the display name, profile image or profile link supplied with it may be public. Blogger handles the sign-in and submission process. We can review comments and remove spam or abusive material. Do not post private contact details or other sensitive information in a public comment.
Usage information: when Google Analytics runs, it measures page visits and interactions, referral sources and browser/device characteristics using identifiers and cookies. This information helps us understand readership and improve navigation and content.

Technical identifiers can be personal data even when they do not contain your name. You do not need to send us an email or post a comment to read an article.

Operating and protecting the website, handling enquiries and moderating comments: our legitimate interests in providing a useful, secure publication and responding to readers, balanced against your rights.
Non-essential analytics and third-party tracking: your consent where it is legally required. Simply browsing this website or reading this notice is not consent.
Legal requests and disputes: applicable legal obligations or legitimate interests in establishing, exercising or defending legal claims.

Cookies, local storage and your choices

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. Local storage is a separate browser storage mechanism used to remember preferences. The website uses the following categories:

Preferences: light/dark reading mode and your saved analytics/Facebook choices. Saved analytics and Facebook choices are treated as valid for up to 180 days. Reading-mode preferences remain until changed or the relevant browser storage is cleared.
Analytics: Google Analytics uses cookies and identifiers to measure site use. See how Google uses information from partner sites and Google’s cookie information.
Platform and external services: Blogger sign-in, security features, Facebook content and embedded media may use their own cookies or storage, depending on the service and your interaction.

Current controls: the website’s “Cookie options” panel lets you switch Analytics and Facebook content off and save your choices. In the current theme configuration, both are enabled by default unless you have saved an opt-out. These controls do not necessarily govern every third-party video, image request or service reached through an external link.

You can revisit Cookie options and change your selection. You can also block or delete cookies and site storage in your browser; doing so can remove saved preferences or affect sign-in. Blocking future collection does not itself erase information already held by a provider. To request deletion of information we control, email us.

Embedded content and external links

Articles can contain videos, photographs or other material hosted by third parties, including YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook. When an embed or externally hosted resource loads, its provider receives technical information about the request and may recognise you if you are signed in to that service. Loading an embed can involve a data transfer before you press play.

For details, consult the relevant provider’s notice: Google and YouTube, Vimeo and Meta/Facebook. Following a link to another website, including Thinking Humanity, Xionia or another publication, takes you to a service with its own privacy practices. A link alone does not subscribe you to that service.

Recipients and international processing

Information is received by the providers needed to host and deliver the website, support enabled analytics and embeds, and handle your communications. These include Google, Meta and our email service providers, where the relevant service is used. Some providers process information on our instructions and others determine purposes of processing for their own services. Their privacy notices explain those activities.

Information may be processed outside your country, including in the United States. For transfers subject to European data-protection law, an appropriate transfer basis is required, such as an applicable adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses. Contact us for information about the safeguards relevant to data we control. Information may also be disclosed when required by law or necessary to handle a legal claim.

How long information is kept

Enquiries: for the period needed to respond, resolve the matter and handle directly related follow-up or legal obligations. The nature of the enquiry and any dispute determine that period.
Public comments: generally while the associated discussion remains published, unless removed through moderation or in response to an applicable request. Platform backups and records are subject to the provider’s retention practices.
Analytics: we use the default GA4 retention setting of 2 months for user-level and event-level data covered by the retention controls. Expired data is deleted through Google’s monthly deletion process. Where the reset-on-new-activity setting applies, a returning user’s identifier-retention period can restart. This setting does not impose a two-month limit on standard aggregated reports. See Google’s explanation of Analytics retention.
Browser preferences: as explained in the cookies section. Clearing browser storage does not delete records held by service providers.

Your privacy rights

Subject to applicable law, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction or portability of your personal data, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. You may withdraw consent without affecting earlier lawful processing. Email our privacy contact; we may need proportionate information to verify your identity. We will respond within the applicable legal deadline.

Children’s information

This is a general-interest publication. Please contact us if you believe a child has submitted personal information that should be removed. Include the relevant page or message details, but do not send identity documents unless we request them through an appropriate process.

Changes to this notice

We will update this page when the services or practices described here change and revise the date above. Introducing advertising, a new newsletter or another tracking service requires an updated disclosure and any consent required for that service. A revised notice does not itself supply that consent.
