A green aurora spreads across Earth while spacecraft hardware occupies the foreground. In one frame, a familiar human-made object and an immense natural display share the view. That meeting of scales gives ISS Symphony much of its appeal.

Editor Dmitry Pisanko published ISS Symphony in June 2015. The film assembles time-lapse sequences from the International Space Station and pairs them with Ludovico Einaudi’s music. Pisanko credits NASA Johnson Space Center’s Image Science & Analysis Laboratory and the Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth for the source images.
A photograph collection becomes a moving journey
In his production notes, Pisanko describes downloading 95,623 source files. That is the size of the material he worked from, not a claim that every file appears in the finished film. He also lists stabilisation, flicker reduction, noise reduction and colour correction among the editing steps.
Those choices help individual exposures flow together. The result is an edited interpretation of astronaut photography, with a pace and visual continuity created for the film.
Time-lapse changes our sense of motion
A time-lapse compresses an interval into a shorter viewing experience. Earth’s changing position, shifting clouds and luminous atmospheric features can therefore seem to move much faster than a person would see them unfold in real time.
Keep an eye on the foreground hardware. It gives the sequence a reference point, making the changing view beyond it easier to appreciate. The contrast is especially effective in the aurora image above.
