The northern lights would be enough to hold your attention. Then you notice the water. In Harald Albrigtsen’s footage, whales appear beneath a green-lit sky, creating two very different kinds of movement in one scene: a distant atmospheric display and animals moving close to the surface.

NRK published the film on 9 October 2015 and credited photographer Harald Albrigtsen. The broadcaster’s description says he encountered the combination on two evenings in a row. That is the specific account behind a clip often reshared with little more than a surprise headline.
Give both parts of the frame a moment
The bright sky is the obvious subject. The darker water asks for a slower look. That difference in visibility makes the scene rewarding: once you notice the animals, the foreground becomes as interesting as the light above it.
It is also a useful example of why a landscape photograph or film benefits from more than one layer. The sky establishes the setting, while the movement at the surface provides a second event at a very different scale. The two do not need to be causally connected to make a memorable composition.
A rare recording is not a booking promise
The film does not mean that a whale-watching trip will include aurora, or that the animals were responding to the lights. Those are separate claims that the image cannot establish. Enjoying the combination does not require adding either one.

Two subjects share the frame without sharing a cause
The whales and the aurora belong to very different physical settings. The animals move through the water close enough to the camera to become visible at the surface; the light occurs high in the atmosphere. Their appearance in one frame is a conjunction of viewpoint and timing, not evidence that the display caused the animals to gather or that the whales were watching it.
That separation makes the film more interesting. The sky supplies broad, changing shapes while the water asks the viewer to notice smaller movements. Rewatching with attention directed first upward and then toward the surface reveals why the combination is so effective. The camera does not need to move between two locations to change the subject of the scene.
Albrigtsen's sequence rewards patience because the two subjects ask for different kinds of attention. A bright moving sky can be noticed immediately, while the water needs a slower look. Let your eye settle there before returning to the aurora. The report dated 9 October 2015 places the recording in the creator's account of two evenings, which is more useful context than a suggestion that such encounters can be arranged. The interest lies in what happened within those particular frames: two separate natural events briefly sharing a view.
