A dark opening in an otherwise frozen pond prompted the filmmaker of this archive to ask what was happening beneath the surface. It is a good observational question, even though the video does not supply a definitive answer.

Several processes can keep water open

Moving water, local inflows and differences in heat exchange can affect freezing. Listing possibilities is not the same as identifying the cause at this particular pond. Neither steam-like appearance nor surrounding snow proves volcanic activity or a gas release.

The opening remains unexplained by the available footage. Ice varies in thickness and structure, and a visible gap does not establish what lies beneath the surrounding surface. Observation from secure ground can document the shape without treating an uncertain explanation as a basis for approaching it.

The account contains more observations than the phone recorded

The filmmaker described noticing an opening during an evening dog walk and reported a vapour-like appearance that the phone did not capture clearly. That distinction matters: a written observation and a visible feature in the footage are separate parts of the evidence. The original account also described disturbed-looking snow or ice particles around the opening, but their cause was not established.

A thickness claim at one position cannot describe the whole pond

The reported twenty-centimetre estimate concerned the area where the person stood. It does not establish the thickness beside an opening or elsewhere on the surface. The opening itself shows that conditions were not uniform. A useful explanation must therefore account for local variation rather than treating the pond as a single solid slab with one measured property.

A better question keeps possible causes open

The most useful question is why this particular part of the pond remained open while the surrounding surface froze. Answering it would require site information about water movement, possible inflows and conditions over time. The remote-looking surroundings cannot rule those possibilities out. Nor does the opening, by itself, identify a gas release or a volcanic process. The recording supplies an observation worth investigating; a convincing explanation would have to account for that local pattern rather than simply attach the most dramatic available label.
