Tomas N’s original upload, published in December 2014, identifies the setting as a frozen mountain lake in Slovakia’s High Tatras. It does not name the lake in its description, so the precise location should not be invented.
Why the ice looks so clear


Ice can transmit light well when there are relatively few bubbles, particles or other features scattering it. Snow mixed into the surface, clusters of air bubbles and rough or fractured layers can make ice look much whiter.
Freezing conditions influence that structure, but “slow freezing makes clear ice” is too simple to explain every natural lake. The water, weather, growth of the ice and subsequent surface changes all matter. The video shows the resulting appearance, not a measured history of how this particular sheet formed.
Transparency is an optical property
Being able to see the bottom does not establish the thickness or load-bearing strength of the ice. A camera cannot reveal all the changes across a lake, including weak areas around moving water.

What the transparent surface reveals
The most striking part of this Slovakian lake film is the view through the surface to the stones below. Familiar cues are missing: there is no blanket of white snow and little obvious cloudy ice, so the walkers appear briefly to be standing on open water. Reflections and the movement of the camera then make the solid surface easier to recognise.
The old article reproduced a Reddit explanation linking transparency to freezing conditions and trapped impurities. That attribution matters: it was a reader’s explanation, not a laboratory analysis of this lake. The footage alone cannot establish the freezing history, ice thickness or conditions outside the frame. Enjoy it as an unusual view into a mountain lake, while keeping the visual property—clarity—separate from claims about whether the surface can support a person.
