A short line with a remarkable climb

The railway from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm packs a substantial change of height into a comparatively short route. The operator lists a length of 4,618 metres and a rise of 1,635 metres. Its maximum gradient is 48%, which is the figure behind its description as the world's steepest cogwheel railway.

48 per cent is not 48 degrees

A percentage gradient compares vertical rise with horizontal distance. At 48%, a line rises 48 metres for every 100 metres measured horizontally. The corresponding angle is approximately 25.6 degrees, calculated as the arctangent of 0.48. An angle of 45 degrees, by comparison, corresponds to a 100% gradient.

This distinction matters when reading a dramatic headline. The percentage is already a striking engineering figure; converting it incorrectly into degrees does not make the railway more impressive. Nor does the maximum mean the whole route has that slope. The operator lists an average gradient of 38%, a separate measure that describes a different aspect of the line.

Why the Locher system is different

On a cogwheel railway, the rack and pinion provide positive engagement rather than relying only on ordinary wheel-to-rail adhesion. Eduard Locher's solution for Pilatus uses horizontally rotating cogwheels engaging with the sides of a central rack. That arrangement addresses the difficulty of maintaining engagement on the railway's unusually steep route.

The important idea is the orientation of the engagement. Imagine the teeth being held from the sides rather than one wheel simply pressing down onto the top of a rack. The history did not stop with electrification

The line opened with steam operation on 4 June 1889 and reopened after electrification on 15 May 1937. A more recent milestone belongs in the story too: the railway reopened with new rolling stock on 5 June 2023. The current operator data lists eight passenger railcars with space for 46 passengers each.

The photographs span an earlier chapter of the railway. The new fleet continues the same steep-route tradition while changing the vehicles in which passengers make the ascent.

Make the railway the centre of the outing

Use the current operating calendar and booking information for a visit. The published overview gives a May-to-November operating period, but that is not a substitute for the timetable on your date. Seat availability and the return journey deserve attention before you travel.

Once aboard, look at how the line meets the terrain. A curve, an exposed section of rack or the changing relationship between the vehicle and the slope can be as interesting as the distant view. At the top, decide whether the railway and viewpoint complete your day or whether you have planned a separate suitable walk. You do not need to add an ambitious hike to make the journey worthwhile.
