The zoo’s announcement of September 12, 2012 dates Max and Savanna’s introduction to September 5, 2012, well before the December 2013 snow recording. It describes Max as a thirteen-week-old Labrador mix and gives Savanna’s birth date as June 22, 2012. Their relationship began while both were young. The video itself captures only a short later moment, rather than the process of introduction or the work of the people managing their care.
Snow provides a pale background against which the two animals’ outlines and changes of direction are easy to follow. Watch how one movement prompts another, rather than looking only for a pose that resembles human friendship. A pause, an approach or a turn can be part of the interaction without needing a spoken intention assigned to it.
