Baishuitai, the White Water Terrace, is a staircase of gleaming white mineral pools on a hillside in northwestern Yunnan, China. It lies at about 2,380 metres at the foot of the Haba Snow Mountain, between Lijiang and Shangri-La, and it is sacred to the Naxi people as the cradle of their Dongba religion.
Where is Baishuitai?
The terraces sit above Baidicun village in Sanba Township, Shangri-La County, part of the Dêqên Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Haba Xueshan, the Haba Snow Mountain, rises just to the south, and the upper Yangtze valley is close by. The setting is rural and mountainous, a world away from the busy tourist towns on either side.
How the white water terraces formed
Baishuitai is a travertine formation. Springs rising from the mountainside carry dissolved calcium carbonate. As the water flows out into the open, it releases carbon dioxide and the mineral settles out, building up a thin white crust layer by layer. Over thousands of years those deposits have grown into rimmed basins and terraces that step down the slope, with about ten spring-fed ponds.
The same process created the better-known terraces of Pamukkale in Turkey and Huanglong in Sichuan. The pale rims are newly deposited rock, which is why the formation looks so bright against the dark forest. The Naxi call the site Shi Pu Zhi, roughly "gradually growing flowers", a fitting name for a landscape that is still slowly building itself.
Naxi Dongba culture and the festival at Baishuitai
For the Naxi, Baishuitai is the birthplace of Dongba culture. Tradition holds that Dingbashiluo, the first saint of the Dongba religion, settled here on his journey from Tibet to Yunnan and meditated in a cave near the terraces. He is credited with creating the Dongba pictographic script and rituals, and later generations built a temple in his memory.
Dongba practice was largely suppressed around Lijiang after 1949 but survived in Sanba, which makes this valley especially important to Naxi heritage. Local Naxi also say their gods built the terraces as copies of heavenly rice fields, inspiring the farming terraces of the region.
On the eighth day of the second lunar month, Naxi families gather at Baishuitai to sing and dance around the terraces and honour the gods.
How to visit Baishuitai
Most visitors come from Shangri-La, around 100 km away by a winding mountain road. Buses from Shangri-La bus station take three to four hours to the Sanba area, and taxis and minibuses also run from Tiger Leaping Gorge. Trekkers can reach the area on foot from Daju in Lijiang County in about two days. The site is open from 7:00 to 17:00.
Stay on the marked paths: the white rims are thin and break easily underfoot.
