Winter water can look like a collection of different materials: glass plates, pale bubbles, tiny flowers and long white threads. The pleasure of this gallery is in the details. Two photographs may both show ice and still have very different stories behind their patterns.

Bubbles and crystals are different structures





Bubbles can become trapped as water freezes, making layers within the ice visible. A photograph alone does not identify the gas inside them, so it is unwise to label every bubble as methane or describe a frozen lake as explosive.
Surface crystals grow into a different kind of pattern. Their fine branches catch light and stand above the darker background. Compare that delicate texture with the smooth outlines of the bubbles: one is a surface feature, while the other reveals material enclosed below it.
Sea ice is not glacier ice






The National Snow and Ice Data Center distinguishes ice formed by freezing seawater from glaciers and icebergs, which originate from snow accumulated on land. Wind, waves and currents can break and move sea ice into plates and ridges.
Frozen freshwater lakes have their own structures and seasonal changes. A shared blue colour does not make every scene the same kind of ice, and a gallery spanning multiple places is not a record of one freezing process.
Look for a visual relationship




In the pond scene, repeated tree trunks create the pattern. In the close-up, angular ice pieces take over. Both reward a simple question: what repeats, and what interrupts that repetition?
You can practise that way of seeing from a safe shore or with a small frozen puddle. There is no need to enter an unassessed lake to make an interesting winter photograph. Generic thickness numbers are not a guarantee of safety across a changing body of water.

A field guide to the gallery’s different surfaces
The eighteen selections are not all examples of the same process or even the same kind of water body. Baikal appears several times, including the emerald ice and northern-lake views. Abraham Lake appears in the bubble photograph and again beside Lake McDonald. The Hokkaido pond is also represented in more than one colour. Those repetitions are useful comparisons: one named place can yield very different photographs.
Several images concentrate on lines. McMurdo Sound contributes a broad sea-ice setting, while the Oregon pond and the Swiss pond draw attention to smaller geometric patterns. The photographs from Lake Erie at Marblehead, Lake Michigan near Chicago, Lake Monona in Wisconsin and Lake Kryspinów near Kraków add recognisable local settings. Keeping those names matters because a close-up of ice often contains too little surrounding landscape to identify its location unaided.
Other frames depend on scale. The rider in Siberia gives the ice a human dimension; the Arctic frost flowers turn a small surface feature into the main subject; the paired Lake McDonald and Abraham Lake image invites comparison within one composition. Lake Druzhby adds an Antarctic lake to a gallery that also includes sea ice, so freshwater and marine settings should not be treated as interchangeable.
The old article attached a universal-looking table of ice thicknesses to the rider photograph. A picture cannot establish the condition, continuity or load-bearing capacity of a frozen surface, and those numbers should not become permission to walk or drive onto it. Likewise, a bubble photograph does not demonstrate that the scene is about to explode. Describing what is visible—stacked bubbles, opaque bands, clear areas or cracks—makes the gallery more accurate without losing its visual fascination.
The most rewarding way to compare the photographs is to separate the surface from the setting. First follow the patterns within the ice, then look for shorelines, mountains, a rider or a familiar body of water. That second pass reveals how differently the photographers use scale and context. The result is a collection of distinct places and viewpoints rather than eighteen illustrations of a single generic winter texture.
