The photographs answer some questions

They show the shape of the accessible opening and researchers working within it. They do not establish the crater’s complete depth from a camera angle, particularly where water, ice or darkness hides the bottom. Early figures quoted online varied widely and should not be combined into one measurement.

The explanation has developed

A 2024 study described by AGU proposed a mechanism involving warming, pressure changes and methane release in the region’s particular geology. The proposed mechanism can be assessed against observations of the region’s frozen ground and the crater itself.

A descent into a crater is a dated observation

The Siberian crater photographs accompany an account of researchers using climbing equipment to reach a frozen surface inside the opening. The human equipment and visible walls help establish scale, but the pictures do not provide a complete survey of everything below the accessible area.

A depth figure is useful only when its reference points are clear. The distance to a frozen surface, the depth of an accessible chamber and an estimate of the unseen opening below are not interchangeable measurements. The early two-hundred-metre suggestion is therefore a reported estimate, not an established depth. In this gallery, ropes, researchers and exposed walls provide a sense of the working environment. They help us picture the descent while leaving the full underground dimensions to surveys rather than visual guesswork.
