A footprint normally goes down into snow. These appear to do the opposite, standing above the surface like tiny pedestals. The surprise comes from looking at the result after the surrounding snow has changed.

The print stays while looser snow moves

A step compresses snow beneath it. If wind later removes the looser material around that compacted patch more readily, the footprint can remain as a raised shape. The walker has not lifted the snow; the neighbouring surface has been lowered.

The effect varies with snow condition and weather. A photograph does not tell us exactly how long each shape took to emerge, and the pattern alone is not a full assessment of the slope’s snow stability.

Follow the trail as a drawing

The gallery reaches beyond Antarctica

The original captions include Blencathra, Snowdonia, locations in Great Britain and Alaska, as well as scenes near McMurdo. Those examples contradict the old suggestion that raised footprints are confined to an Antarctic backyard. The relevant combination is the snow’s condition and subsequent erosion, not membership in one region.

A step compresses a patch; later removal of surrounding material changes the relative height. Looking at a line of prints can make that process easier to understand than studying one isolated shape. The repeated steps show where a person or animal passed before the surface changed.

A clue is not a complete snow assessment

The feature can indicate that wind has worked on the snow, but it does not by itself establish slope stability or a precise duration of exposure. Retain the photographs as examples of surface change rather than turning them into a stand-alone avalanche decision rule.
