Anton Balazh’s relief illustrations make mountain belts stand out against the surrounding land. The result is a useful invitation to compare landscapes across a much larger area than a conventional mountain photograph shows.
These are rendered geographic views
Shading, colour and viewpoint help make terrain legible. They should not be confused with a single photograph taken from a spacecraft, even where NASA material contributed to an illustration. Apparent steepness also depends on the rendering’s treatment of elevation and perspective.
Use the overview to ask better questions
Notice whether ranges form long chains, cluster around plateaus or meet a coastline. Then turn to a labelled topographic map for specific heights, boundaries or routes. A relief illustration is excellent for noticing broad patterns, while precise planning needs a scale and named locations.

Read relief as a designed representation
The nine views cover the western United States and Mexico, western Europe, eastern Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Alaska, South America, Australia, and Japan with Korea and China. They are visualisations, not photographs taken from a single spacecraft viewpoint. NASA-derived elements contribute to the work, while Balazh is the creator of the rendered maps.
Shading helps ridges and valleys stand out, but the apparent steepness depends on the representation. Use the images to notice broad patterns and connections rather than estimate a walking gradient or plan a route. A relief view can explain a continent’s structure while remaining unsuitable for local navigation.
