Nicole Dextras’ IceShifts gives clothing a temporary body of its own. Shirts, dresses and other garments stand within ice, separated from the people who would normally wear them.

Fabric seen through a changing material

Fabric provides colour and a recognisable human shape, while the ice supports and distorts it. As the ice changes, the same piece can become less clearly defined. Time is therefore part of the installation, not simply a threat to its preservation.

IceShifts in the surrounding landscape

A street, a snowy open space or a building behind the block affects how the garment appears. Looking at those surroundings makes the work more than a clever freezing technique: it becomes a meeting between ordinary personal objects and the weather around them.

The missing wearer

A shirt or dress carries the suggestion of a body even when no one is inside it. Ice holds that suggestion upright, making the garment appear suspended between an everyday object and a figure. The familiarity of the clothing is essential: the viewer supplies the missing person from the shape and use of the fabric.

What the photograph holds after the ice changes

The photographs offer several ways into the work. Begin with the outline of the block, then look at the folds enclosed within it and finally at the setting beyond. A dress may suggest a figure, but the visible edge of the ice interrupts that reading and makes the construction apparent again. The viewer moves between seeing a person-shaped absence and seeing the materials that produce it. Colour helps with that shift: fabric remains recognisably domestic even when its setting has become strange. These installations also make a photograph an unusually important part of the artwork’s later life. A garment can remain familiar while the ice supporting it changes or disappears, so a picture preserves one arrangement rather than an indefinitely stable object. The outdoor setting belongs to that arrangement too. A snowy field and a built street would give the same clothing different associations, leaving the landscape as an active part of Dextras’ work.
