A patch of light above a storm cloud was enough to make a cyclist in Greenwood, Indiana stop and reach for a phone. The resulting recording, uploaded by QuadeM13 in June 2015, became known as a crown-flash video.

In the description of the original recording, the uploader says an approaching storm and an unusual light caught their attention during a bicycle ride. That first-hand account establishes the setting and keeps the account connected to a named original source.
Why the name “crown flash”?
The uploader describes an explanation involving sunlight, aligned ice particles and the electrical field around a thunderstorm. It is an interpretation of the shifting light, rather than a measurement of the cloud’s electrical conditions. The short phone recording alone cannot establish every part of that mechanism.
This distinction is useful whenever an unusual sky video circulates. The image records an appearance; a physical explanation needs additional evidence. Neither a mysterious soundtrack nor a confident caption supplies that evidence by itself.
Look at the light against a fixed reference
When watching, compare the bright area with the cloud edge and the power lines. Fixed objects help separate movement in the scene from movement of the phone. Changes in exposure can also affect how a bright cloud looks in a recording, so avoid drawing conclusions from one isolated frame.

This helps separate movement in the light from movement introduced by the handheld camera. The original uploader’s account places the observation during a bicycle ride in Greenwood. That first-hand setting is more informative than the later claim that the footage was creating controversy. A question about an unusual light effect can remain interesting without inventing a dispute or declaring that no observer could normally see it. After all, the rider reported noticing the light before deciding to record.
The proposed crown-flash explanation and the recorded observation should remain distinct. The film shows an appearance; an explanation attempts to account for it using atmospheric conditions. Naming that distinction makes room for scientific curiosity while avoiding the false choice between treating every online explanation as proven and dismissing an unusual observation because a short phone video leaves questions unanswered.
