Before the spectacular dive comes a quieter moment. A red fox pauses above the snow, ears alert, concentrating on a world hidden below the white surface. Then the hunt becomes a leap. It is a wonderfully expressive piece of animal behaviour, and a reminder that what we can see is only part of the scene.

Discovery’s North America clip, published in 2013, features this hunting behaviour, commonly called mousing. The fox’s hearing helps it locate small prey when vegetation or snow blocks a direct view.
Where the magnetic-field idea comes from
A 2011 study by Jaroslav Červený and colleagues reported directional patterns in fox hunting. Under snow or tall vegetation, successful attacks were concentrated towards the north. The researchers proposed that magnetic alignment might improve the accuracy of these jumps.
That is an intriguing hypothesis, rather than a complete demonstration of a built-in targeting system. The observed relationship does not, by itself, reveal the sensory mechanism or explain every individual pounce. Hearing remains central to the account, and the study’s careful wording matters.
Watch the preparation, not only the landing
The leap makes an excellent short clip, but the attentive pause is just as interesting. It directs our attention to an animal gathering information before moving. Try watching for the transition between listening, positioning and action rather than treating the dive as a single comic moment.
If you encounter a fox outdoors, give it space to continue its normal behaviour. Observing quietly from a distance is more rewarding than trying to draw it closer with food.

One filmed hunt and a study answer different questions
The Discovery sequence makes an individual hunt visible: the fox pauses, positions itself and jumps into snow that conceals its prey. The separate research question concerns patterns across many hunting attempts. A memorable successful pounce cannot, on its own, tell us which sensory information the fox used or whether direction improved the result.
The directional-hunting study proposes a connection with magnetic alignment, but that explanation should retain the word hypothesis. Demonstrating a pattern, identifying a sensory mechanism and predicting the success of the next attempt are different steps. A television narration can make them sound like one completed discovery when the underlying argument is more qualified.
It is also worth separating snow depth from what the camera makes it look like. A fox disappearing headfirst provides a striking impression, but the frame does not measure three feet of snow throughout the hunting area. Listen to the narration as an interpretation and watch the animal’s behaviour as the observation. The most revealing part may be the stillness before the leap: the fox is responding to a scene mostly hidden from a human observer. Preserving that sequence and its programme credit lets the film remain engaging without giving the animal a proven magnetic targeting system.
