A helmet camera makes a mountain scene feel close and immediate. In Sorin Radu’s avalanche footage, that closeness becomes unsettling: the visible slope changes quickly, and the person behind the camera has very little time to respond.

Radu’s original upload, published in February 2015, records the incident from his perspective. He survived, but that outcome is not a measure of how predictable the event was or how another person would fare in similar-looking terrain.
What a helmet camera leaves outside the frame
The lens shows the direction the rider is looking. It does not provide a complete view of the slope above, neighbouring terrain, the snowpack or the decisions made before the descent. A small screen also makes it difficult to judge distances and changes in steepness.
For that reason, identifying a single visible patch of snow as the whole explanation would go beyond the evidence. The useful lesson is how quickly a familiar-looking surface can become moving snow, not a formula for predicting a release from a video.
Turn the viewing experience into better questions
Before travelling in avalanche terrain, ask where the relevant local bulletin comes from, what terrain it describes and how the group will use it alongside training and observations.
