A temporary mould made by weather
Freezing rain can coat exposed objects with ice, copying details of the surface beneath it. In this case, the remaining shell is consistent with an icy coating separating from the vehicle while parts of it stayed supported near the ground.
The popular explanation is that warming around the vehicle helped release the coating before it drove away. That is plausible, but the photographs alone do not document the temperature, timing or exact sequence of detachment.

Why the second angle helps
One view makes the shape look almost solid. The other reveals how thin and hollow it is. Together, the pictures explain the visual trick without needing a supernatural story: we recognise a familiar outline even when its usual material is missing.

The vehicle has gone, but its outline remains
These North Carolina photographs are compelling because the ice preserves the shape of an object that is no longer there. A recognisable bumper or grille outline seems suspended in the parking space, with icicles connecting it to the ground. The absent vehicle becomes as important to the composition as the remaining shell.
The earlier account suggested that warming the engine helped release the ice before the driver left. That is a proposed explanation, not a sequence demonstrated by the still photographs. The images establish the surviving shape much more securely than the exact steps that produced it. Retaining the WITN attribution and describing the shell as an unusual ice-storm aftermath keeps the story grounded without needing a ghostly-car claim or a supposedly proven formation mechanism.
