Fifteen Ice Sculptures: Form, Transparency and Light

A horn becomes visible where it catches the light. A wing needs shadow between its layers. Ice sculpture asks the viewer to look at the material and the carving together, because transparency can reveal a form in one place and almost erase it in another.

The outline is only the beginning

In the bull, strong curves make the animal recognisable quickly. The winged work depends more on repeated details. The dinosaur brings another challenge: separating limbs and body within a material that lets parts of the background show through.

Compare the brightest edges with the cloudy or textured areas. Clear and opaque sections carry different amounts of visual information, so lighting is part of how the finished piece is understood.
