Santra, a brown bear photographed at Ähtäri Zoo in Finland, became an internet favourite for a very human-looking stretch. Seated on a rock with her legs lifted, she resembles someone settling into a yoga pose.

A bear’s stretch and a familiar resemblance
Photographer Meta Penca described a sequence of slow stretches after the bear rested. That observation supports the description of the movement, but does not establish that Santra learned yoga, followed a daily exercise programme or understood a human discipline.
Movement between the photographs
The photographs are enjoyable without supplying an imaginary instructor or a precise routine. Look at how the position changes between frames and how the body is supported by the rock. These are archive images of a zoo animal, not an invitation to approach a bear encountered outdoors.

The rock and the changing posture
The rock gives Santra a steady place within the frame as her posture changes. In a wide view it helps explain how she is sitting; a closer view draws attention to her lifted legs. That combination makes the human resemblance easy to recognise without needing an invented account of what the bear was thinking.
The photographs are credited to Meta Penca and BNPS. Penca’s account supplies the sequence of rest and stretching behind the images, keeping the gallery attached to a particular visit to Ähtäri Zoo.
A sequence rather than a pose
Looking at the sequence rather than choosing a single pose leaves room for movement between the images. A photograph freezes one position so completely that it can seem like a planned performance; the next frame may change that impression. This is part of the pleasure of an animal gallery. Each image has its own composition, while the group reminds us that the animal was doing more than holding the one position that first caught our attention.
