A site record is not a statewide record

The original report gave a depth of 194 inches and compared it with a previous measurement at that same place. It did not establish the deepest snow ever recorded anywhere in Colorado. Nor was the pit a measure of snowfall from one storm.

Depth and water content answer different questions

The pit shows vertical depth. Snow-water equivalent concerns how much water the snow contains, which depends on density as well. Keeping those quantities separate makes an impressive photograph useful for understanding a snow report, rather than just another enormous number.

A person makes the measurement visible

The photograph identifies U.S. Forest Service employee Nick Bencke standing inside the pit. At 194 inches, the reported depth converts to about 16 feet 2 inches, or 4.93 metres. The walls and the person give that otherwise abstract figure a physical scale. The account’s comparison was with a measurement nine inches shallower at the same location on April 5, 2011, as described by retired avalanche expert Art Judson.

Keep the location beside the number

Buffalo Pass is the named setting for the measurement. A pit records the snow at that sampling point, and its depth combines the effects of accumulation, settling and local conditions over time. It is not a count of fresh snow in a single storm. Keeping the place, date and measured quantity together makes the photograph much more informative than the broad claim that Colorado had reached an all-time maximum.
