A flame changes the experiment

A lighter can deposit soot. Meanwhile, porous snow can hold some meltwater between its grains instead of immediately releasing a visible stream. The presence or absence of one dramatic drip is not a chemical identification test.

Use a simpler observation

Let a small sample melt in a clean container at room temperature and compare the snow’s volume with the resulting water. That removes the flame and its soot from the demonstration. It still does not establish drinking-water quality; it simply addresses the misleading claim that ordinary snow cannot melt.

Equal volume does not mean equal water content

A fluffy handful of snow contains spaces between ice grains. A compact ice cube of the same outside dimensions contains much more solid ice. Comparing their visible meltwater without allowing for that difference gives a misleading impression. The original discussion used this contrast to explain why the two samples did not appear to behave identically under a lighter.

Where a small amount of meltwater can go

Water formed within porous snow can move among the surrounding grains instead of immediately falling as a large drop. Meteorologist Bob Larson’s explanation in the original report compared that retention to a sponge. The comparison is about where liquid can remain visible or hidden, not a claim that snow has become a different substance. A missing puddle is therefore not enough to identify the material chemically.

The flame adds another material to the scene

A lighter is not a neutral observation tool. Its flame can leave soot, making a darkened patch that belongs to the burning fuel as well as the surface being heated. Treating that mark as proof that the snow itself is plastic skips an essential alternative explanation. It also confuses an appearance with a chemical test.

A clearer comparison asks one question at a time

Watching snow melt in a clean container removes the flame from the setup and makes the resulting liquid easier to observe. Comparing starting volume and final water volume addresses the amount of air in the snow, while the original viral video mixed melting, drainage and fuel residue. The simpler observation is useful because it isolates a question; it does not certify purity or answer every possible question about the sample.
