The widely shared 2013 “North Pole lake” image shows a summer melt pond on sea ice. Water at the surface made a striking picture, but the North Pole had not simply turned into an open lake.

The camera had drifted with the ice

The observatory’s explanation places the equipment around 85°N, 5°W at the time discussed. Its name did not mean every later image was taken at the geographic pole.

One pond is not the entire climate record

Researchers described the local melt-pond coverage as typical for that place and season, while broader Arctic change remained a separate scientific concern. That distinction strengthens the explanation: long-term trends should be assessed with wider observations, not exaggerated through one miscaptioned photograph.

The equipment moved with its platform

An instrument deployed on sea ice does not remain fixed at the geographic North Pole as the ice drifts. The observatory’s location explanation therefore matters as much as the name on the project. The recorded pond was on an ice floe at the position discussed above, not proof that the exact pole had become a permanent open lake.

A surface pond and open ocean are different

The original account itself acknowledged ice beneath the water. A shallow pond on top of sea ice is not the same thing as open seawater extending down through the ice cover. Keeping that distinction resolves much of the misleading headline without dismissing the value of the observation.

The local image and the long-term trend

A camera can reveal changes near its equipment over a particular interval. A broader claim about Arctic sea-ice change needs observations across a much larger area and time span. Those are complementary scales of study, not opposing positions. The image can be ordinary for its local season while the wider climate record still requires serious analysis.

What the time-lapse contributes

The retained sequence makes the changing surface around the equipment easier to follow than a single circulated still. Its value increases when the drifting location and the melt-pond interpretation remain attached. The original Santa joke and universal navigation promises are unnecessary to understand what the camera recorded.
