Adam LeWinter and Jeff Orlowski filmed a major calving event near Ilulissat on May 28, 2008, later featured in Chasing Ice. The wide wall of moving ice makes scale difficult to grasp at first.
Use the film’s comparisons carefully
The production’s measurements and time descriptions help explain the event, but the edited clip compresses what the camera team observed. “Largest ever filmed” is the film’s historical description, not an independently maintained current record here.
Calving and long-term change are related but distinct
One breakup shows a glacier front losing ice at that moment. Understanding its longer evolution requires observations across time. This sequence is a powerful visual record and a useful companion to repeat photography, rather than a complete climate analysis by itself.

A long event is compressed into a short film
The production account described about seventy-five minutes of calving. The excerpt selects and compresses the visible movement, so its running time should not be confused with the duration at the glacier. Large slabs rotate and break apart at different moments, making the moving ice front more complicated than one solid block falling into the water.
Scale comes from relationships within the scene
Scale is difficult to judge when the frame contains ice, water and very few familiar objects. The production’s comparisons help bridge that gap, while the film lets viewers follow relationships within the scene: one piece moves against another, an exposed face changes shape, and the waterline provides a reference. The May 28, 2008 date and the camera team’s names give the event a historical anchor. They are more useful than allowing the same footage to circulate as an unidentified new collapse.

Delete"We" taking care of mother earth is like asking the new born baby to take care of the mother. It is just my guess, but i think what you mean to say with "We" need to take care of mother earth, is "we are going to kill the human race if we don't stop acting the way we are acting as a species."
DeleteThat is just plain egotistical. Mother earth is fully capable of taking care of herself. Once the parasite is gone, mother earth will replenish herself with some new top of the food chain species. Or maybe even several.
You're not really taking into account all the species that will be wiped out though are you? You have what is a fatalastic approach to reality and the environment. It's a useless position.
DeleteLife will go on and what species are wiped out and hopefully it is mankind, because we have no idea how to look after anything, new species will evolve or planted, you see the earth is a bloody big zoo, whereby ancient civilizations with the knowledge to travel interplanetary will leave new species.
DeleteI can't believe that they went to all this bother to film such a magnificent event and didn't have a camera setup behind the crew to give us some proper scale. The manhattan overlay just didn't do it for me. The video is still awesome though.

ReplyDeleteWe must understand that the large scale military industry that uses weapons on literally all of our beautiful planet and its' ecosystems is causing untold destruction all over the planet. Nowhere and no living thing or biological system is being spared. It's a tragedy of galactic proportions. Global warming is NOT the cause of this. In fact, we are on our way to another Ice Age. I have produced over 34 segments on Climate, Weather and Geology and feel that I see a clear perspective. CO2 is food for plants. We are made of it. The planet needs it to flourish. Learn the science. It's worth it.

Animal deaths, plant deaths people deaths. fight that, not "climate change" which seems to be the inherited panic from "global warming". Politics wont stop massive earth changes but it might defuse nuclear war.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that mainstream media don't talk about, is the influence of our sun and the position of our galaxy with the position of our solar system, electromagnetic fields and it's affect on the inner core of our planet,the electromagnetic fields are beginning to weaken the earth's crusts, volcanoes, earthquakes and tremors are increasing in numbers everyday. Greenhouse emission are also occurring with the amount of material being blasted into the air by these volcanoes. Think about what you believe is the truth on climate change, it has been happening throughout time and in stages. What has gone around will come around again.
