A soap bubble is a thin liquid film surrounding air. As its water freezes, the pattern develops within that curved film rather than through a deep container of liquid.

A 2019 study of freezing soap bubbles found different freezing behaviours under different thermal conditions, including a swirling “snow globe” effect. That research explains why one striking clip should not be treated as the universal way all bubbles freeze.
