Ice on Fences, Roofs and Towers: Familiar Structures Transformed

A wire fence becomes a neat grid of white projections. Elsewhere, hanging forms develop rounded openings and a tree acquires a clear icy coating. The shared material is ice; the history behind each photograph may be different.

The support shapes the pattern

Thin wire offers a repeated structure for a coating to build around. Windward rime can make exposed objects look surprisingly thick, as supercooled droplets freeze onto them. That is different from solid chunks of ice simply blowing through the fence.

The original gallery assigned precise causes to several pictures without providing measurements or a traceable account for each one. An image alone cannot establish whether a particular coating came from freezing fog, rain or sprayed water. It can still show how an ordinary support influences the final shape.

Compare surfaces, then ask about conditions

Five supports, five different-looking ice scenes

The gallery moves from a wire fence to a beach fence, a roof edge, a telecommunications structure and a sprinkler-affected scene. The supporting object matters in every case. It supplies lines, gaps or projecting parts around which the visible ice takes shape, making familiar structures look unfamiliar.

The old captions proposed a cause for each image, but the photographs do not contain a complete weather record. A fence pattern alone cannot establish the exact combination of wind, spray or freezing precipitation. The useful comparison is therefore structural: repeated openings in one frame, an overhanging edge in another and a much larger tower in a third. That approach preserves all five examples without treating them as demonstrations of one identical process.

  1. The third picture, with the sideways icicles, isn't from an updraft. As the snow slowly slides off the roof the weight of it bends the overhanging part down, and the attached icicles point to the side, and even upward.

  2. Checking for wear and tear is the first step in winterizing your wooden fence. Make sure the wood is dry and dry-day work is performed. Keep an eye out for any potential decaying areas. Wood that has decayed must be removed and repaired.
