A hole in Siberian permafrost is a scientific puzzle worth understanding on its own. Linking it to the Bermuda Triangle may create a louder headline, but it adds a claim the evidence does not establish.

What later research proposed
A 2024 study reported by AGU explored how warming and the Yamal region’s unusual underground conditions could build pressure and trigger methane release. Its proposed mechanism involves water movement and changes in pressure, rather than a mysterious external impact.









This is a model for a particular geological setting. It does not mean every depression in frozen ground forms the same way, or that methane automatically explains unrelated disappearances at sea.
Why the Bermuda comparison fails
NOAA’s Bermuda Triangle explanation states that evidence does not show mysterious disappearances occurring more frequently there than in other large, well-travelled ocean areas. A speculative analogy is not a demonstrated connection.

Start with the crater, not the legend
The Yamal photographs document an opening in frozen ground and a research team examining it. Walls, surface material and water at the bottom are observations; the process that created the opening is an explanation to be tested. That separation is the most useful starting point for understanding the story. A dramatic shape alone does not identify a meteorite impact, a weapons test or a gas eruption.
The original report mixed several proposed explanations with speculation about the Bermuda Triangle. It also included a caution from Vladimir Pushkarev that the team needed to examine its material before reaching firm conclusions. That cautious part of the account deserves as much attention as its most spectacular analogy. The uncertainty was part of the science being reported, not a gap that a more exciting headline could fill.
Frozen ground contains several different materials
Permafrost describes ground that remains frozen over the required period; it is not simply a thick sheet of pure ice. Soil, ice, water and gas can have different roles within a frozen landscape. A depression caused by the loss of ground ice and an opening produced by a pressure release may both look striking from above, but their formation histories need not be the same.
A pingo is an ice-cored mound. Mentioning one does not establish that every circular crater is a collapsed pingo, just as finding methane in a region does not identify the full chain of events that created a particular hole. A useful explanation needs the relationship between the materials, their arrangement and the forces acting on them.
A later model adds a pressure mechanism
The 2024 research described by AGU proposes that warming interacts with unusual saline layers within Yamal permafrost. Water moving into those layers can raise pressure and fracture the ground. A subsequent pressure drop can destabilise methane hydrates and release gas. This is a proposed sequence involving particular underground conditions, not simply the statement that warm weather melts a hole.
The distinction between physical pressure release and chemical combustion also matters. An explosive event does not automatically mean that fuel burned. A model can examine whether pressure changes are sufficient to produce a rupture, while field observations help assess whether the required conditions exist at the site.
Why the expedition photographs still matter
Images of the researchers and crater interior record the scale and accessibility of the opening during that visit. They can help connect surface appearance with the materials encountered below, but they do not replace sample analysis or measurements. A later photograph may show a changed wall or water level rather than a contradiction of the earlier image.
The old text gave inconsistent depths and conversions. In particular, 16.5 metres is about 54 feet, not 65 feet. It also referred to a frozen water surface around 10.5 metres below the surface. Those numbers may refer to different features, and the supplied account does not make a single definitive depth clear. They should remain qualified historical descriptions instead of being combined into an invented measurement.
The ocean comparison needs its own evidence
NOAA explains that evidence does not show mysterious disappearances happening more often in the Bermuda Triangle than in other large, heavily travelled ocean areas. That removes the premise that a special disappearance mechanism has already been demonstrated there. A land crater in Siberia cannot supply missing evidence for an unrelated maritime claim.
The quoted idea about methane, ships and aircraft was a hypothesis offered in the early coverage. It should not be promoted to a proven link merely because gas release is relevant to the Siberian setting. Two stories can share a word such as methane while differing in location, pressure, materials and the observations that need explaining.
How to read the next crater discovery
Look for a dated observation, a description of the material and a clear distinction between the measured result and the proposed mechanism. Ask whether a later paper examines this crater, another crater or a model of conditions that might occur in the region. Those are related contributions, but they answer different questions.
The Yamal story becomes more interesting when those distinctions remain visible. It combines fieldwork, images of an unusual landscape and explanations that can be refined as evidence accumulates. The photographs retain their value as an expedition archive, while the geological account can develop without borrowing a mystery from another part of the world.
