What a trophic cascade means

Predators can affect prey populations and behaviour, with consequences for vegetation and other organisms. Those linked effects are often described as a trophic cascade. They do not mean that one species controls every change in a park.

The National Park Service’s wolf-restoration account places the 1990s reintroduction within a longer history of predator removal, wildlife management and changing human attitudes. Other carnivores and shifts in elk and bison populations also belong to that story.

Ask which link the evidence supports

A useful reading separates a predator’s effect on herbivores from claims about vegetation recovery or river shape. Each connection needs its own observations, timescale and consideration of other influences. The park is not a controlled experiment with only one moving part.

The film’s compressed narrative makes the connections memorable; a careful reading keeps the multiple influences visible. The strongest question is not whether wolves matter, but which change has been observed, over what period, and how confidently it can be attributed.
