Autumn colour brings warmth into Yading’s high mountain scenery. A stream threads through the foreground, while rock and snow hold the distance. The result is a landscape with several layers to explore before the eye reaches the skyline.
A lived and meaningful landscape
Yading lies in Sichuan, China, within a Tibetan cultural setting. Describing it as a place only recently “discovered” by outsiders erases the communities and traditions that already knew it. The mountains have significance beyond their appeal in a travel photograph.
The lake image changes the balance again, concentrating colour within a much barer setting. Its clear appearance is a photographic quality, not evidence that untreated water is suitable to drink.
Separate a viewpoint from a complete trek
A short visit and a multi-day mountain route involve different preparation, access and conditions. These photographs do not establish an easy itinerary for every visitor.
