The deepest snowfall does not tell the whole story of a winter storm. Timing, the built environment and the places under the heaviest precipitation help explain why events with very different totals can have serious consequences. Three historic examples make that difference clear.

Washington, January 1922: snow and a building disaster

The Knickerbocker storm is remembered for the collapse of a Washington, D.C., theatre roof under accumulated snow. The archive photograph documents the damaged building, rather than a generic winter street scene. It is a reminder that a storm’s legacy can be defined by one catastrophic structural failure.

The event belongs to January 1922. Keeping its date and identity attached to the photograph prevents it from becoming an illustration for an unrelated modern blizzard.

Atlanta, January 2014: a small total, major disruption

The National Weather Service account of 28–29 January 2014 records only one to three inches of snow in parts of metropolitan Atlanta, yet thousands of motorists became stranded. The agency’s timeline and event summary show why snowfall depth alone is a poor measure of travel impact.

This was the January 2014 event, not a 2013 storm. Its value as a comparison is precisely that disruptive winter conditions do not require the largest accumulation in a national ranking.

Buffalo, November 2014: sharp local differences

The NWS account of the 17–19 November lake-effect event describes exceptional snow in the hardest-hit areas and strong differences over nearby locations. A second event followed on 19–20 November.

A regional headline can hide that uneven footprint. When reading historical totals, check the observing location and the period measured before combining numbers or calling them a citywide amount.

Ten episodes, rather than ten interchangeable blizzards

The Great Blizzard of 1888 belongs to the northeastern United States in March of that year. The Great Blizzard of 1899 is a separate later event, not “1889” as one sentence in the old text suggested. Keeping the years distinct is the first step towards a useful historical overview. Their snow and transport stories should not be combined into one set of totals.

The 1913 Great Lakes storm, often called the White Hurricane, adds a maritime setting. Ships, wind and waves make its effects different from a photograph of a city street buried in snow. It belongs in a discussion of destructive cold-season weather, but not in a list ranked solely by snowfall depth.

Niagara’s 1848 interruption is different again. The Library of Congress describes an ice dam at the source of the Niagara River on Lake Erie. The event was therefore a blockage of the water supply, not evidence that the whole waterfall froze into a stationary wall. It also occurred in late March, making the broad label “the winter of 1848” less precise than the dated event.

Washington’s 1922 Knickerbocker storm is remembered through a particular building disaster. The theatre photograph should remain tied to that event rather than serving as an anonymous illustration of heavy snow. The connection between accumulation and the built environment gives this entry its historical importance.

The 1975 storm commonly called the Super Bowl Blizzard combined severe weather in different regions. The old article’s tornado death figure of 377 is not retained as a verified statistic. Its useful place in the collection is as a reminder that one weather system can produce different hazards, and that tornado and blizzard impacts need separate accounting.

The February 2010 storms around Washington and the wider Mid-Atlantic are often grouped under the nickname Snowmageddon. A nickname is not an observing station, however: a city, airport or regional total must be identified before numbers can be compared. A monthly accumulation also measures something different from one storm’s snowfall.

Atlanta’s major traffic disruption belongs to January 2014, correcting the earlier 2013 date. Buffalo’s November 2014 lake-effect episodes belong to a different setting and produced sharply uneven local snowfall. Together they demonstrate why a small metropolitan total and a very large local total can both lead to serious disruption without being directly comparable measures.

Finally, the 2014 polar-vortex headlines describe a broader cold-weather context rather than one single blizzard lasting several months. Keeping that category separate prevents a misleading ranking. This ten-part collection is most useful as a set of historical examples—snowstorms, a lake storm, an ice blockage and cold outbreaks—whose causes and consequences differ. The photographs retain their original place in the story while the text explains those distinctions.
