The board is familiar. The snowy beach behind it changes everything. Arctic Swell places surfing in a landscape far removed from the warm-water postcard, giving the journey and the setting as much attention as the wave.

The SmugMug film features photographer Chris Burkard with surfers Patrick Millin, Brett Barley and Chadd Konig. Their shared experience is part of the story; the image of one person on a beach does not mean the undertaking was solitary.
Notice how the shoreline prepares the viewer for the water. Snow, mountain and surf occupy the same frame, so the transition into the sea has a different emotional weight from a beach scene in summer.
A different way to see a surf landscape

The shore, the photographer and the wave
The title Arctic Swell brings together the film’s two scales: a broad geographical setting and the immediate movement of a wave. Burkard’s role as photographer adds another interest alongside the surfers’ experience. A ride lasts briefly, while making a photograph asks where to stand, what to include and which moment gives the setting its meaning. The shore is therefore part of the subject, rather than background to be cropped away whenever the action begins.
The production’s description emphasised the demands of the cold on the group as well as the attraction of the place. That gives the film more texture than a simple warm-versus-cold comparison. The snowy beach can look beautiful to a viewer while representing real effort for the people there. Watching with both ideas in mind allows the images to remain inviting without confusing an edited expedition with an effortless holiday. The team’s shared work is part of what makes those short moments on a wave possible.
