Collecting the sap, one bucket at a time

Reddit contributor speckle77 documented a family project involving about 65 tapped maple trees. The first photographs follow the spile, the collecting bucket and the first drops before moving to the larger containers used to gather the harvest. On a productive day, the family reported collecting roughly 45 gallons. The ice visible in the containers came from sap that had frozen overnight in the tree buckets. These quantities describe their particular project, whose pace depended on what the trees supplied.

The long work at the evaporating pan

The family used an outdoor fire pit beneath a pan they said could hold about 75 gallons. Fresh sap was added as water boiled away, so the final batch represented more liquid than the pan held at any one moment. Their account put the starting total above 250 gallons and the concentrated remainder at about five gallons. That is approximately a fifty-to-one volume reduction for this reported batch. It explains why the finished bottles look modest beside the equipment and fuel needed along the way.

Filtering and filling complete the sequence

The felt funnel drained slowly, and the family photographed the residue that accumulated in it. Their description openly acknowledged uncertainty about scraping that material away. The gallery records the experiment rather than validating that shortcut. It then follows the syrup into bottles, including the distinctive reused whisky bottle.
