Winter survival includes getting spring timing right

Forest Service research explains that many temperate trees need a combination of winter chilling and subsequent warmth before buds open. Different species have different requirements. This delay helps avoid exposing tender new growth too early, when a late frost could damage it. Winter is therefore not simply an empty interval between growing seasons: the conditions experienced during it help shape the next stage.

Why one warm afternoon does not tell the whole story

A tree’s seasonal response depends on more than the temperature at the moment someone photographs it. The sequence of cold and warmth matters. The Forest Service’s work on Pacific Northwest species highlights that combination rather than a single universal threshold. For an observer, the useful comparison is repeated visits to the same tree, noting when buds change and how that timing differs from nearby species.
