An Avalanche Could Have Been Tragic, But Instead, These Skiers Experienced A Miracle

An Avalanche Could Have Been Tragic, But Instead, These Skiers Experienced A MiracleOne moment, James Mort was having fun skiing in the Swiss Alps with his friends. In an instant, he was gone, completely covered by a large blanket of snow from a terrifying avalanche.

The moment the avalanche struck James and his three friends (as well as the harrowing rescue that followed) was all captured on a GoPro camera that one of his friends, Daniel O'Sullivan, had mounted on his helmet. Twenty seconds into the video is when the group encounters the avalanche, and James can be seen getting buried by the snow. James's friends soon come to the realization he is nowhere to be found, ultimately spotting his ski pole sticking out of the snow.

In the hopes that others will learn from his mistakes and know the dangers of avalanches, James wrote a detailed article about how lucky he is to be alive and what people should know before skiing in dangerous areas. "I looked up just in time to watch the avalanche envelop me," James writes on his blog. "The last thing I managed to do before I was completely buried was to reach as high as I could above the snow with my left arm and ski pole. This may have ultimately saved my life."
